A baby shower is a celebration for either a new mum or a soon-to-be mum! It is called a baby shower because the new mum (and baby) are “showered with gifts. A baby shower can be arranged by anybody from the mum, to a relative to a friend – there is no general rule and it changes quite a bit depending on the persons background. It is very much an American tradition but it is celebrated in other countries around the world as more and more people see the benefit and the sense of fun and enjoyment that a baby shower can bring. Many countries have parties to welcome new babies into the world, but these are usually quite different to baby showers. The one thing that all these celebrations do seem to have in common however is that they are all meant for women to attend and not men.

The type of gifts brought to a baby shower can differ very much but they usually are something for either the mother or the baby to help make life a little easier or at least cheaper for the mother. For example a baby monitor (two way radio or camera) is a very popular gift as it is not one the mum would necessarily have bought herself, as it is a bit of a luxury, but at the same time it is a great gift that the mum would really appreciate as it helps her keep an eye or ear on her baby. Baby bottles, toys, clothes, music cds and baby books for the parent to read are all popular choices when it comes to buying a gift. Another idea is to combine with all the other women going and get one big joint gift.

Some mothers organise the baby shower themselves and this is not always easy. There lots of things to think about such as what games to play, what food to serve and of course creating baby shower invitations yourself. This can be trick as baby shower invitation wording is quite tricky as it must sound celebratory and fun as well as polite. A good idea might be to make the whole thing fun by making a theme for the whole party, such as as a teddy bears picnic (everybody could bring a bear, you decorate your house with bear related things and have relevant music), or else a popular children’s television show, such as sesame street, or perhaps nursery rhymes. If you already know the gender of the baby then you could simply have a boy or a girl theme.

To keep the party flowing games and prizes are a great idea! You can play games such as everybody pretending to be a famous person and trying to guess who everybody else is. There are so many other games that you could play that it is best to make sure you have two or three ideas set up just in case the party starts running low on steam. Also have some music available so that there is a fun atmosphere at all times!
